The highest sentiment of devotion is Madhurya Bhav, in which the Gopis loved Shri Krishna as their Beloved. They desired nothing for themselves; their only concern was His happiness. This alone is true, selfless love.
A beautiful pastime reveals the unparalleled glory of Gopi Prem.
Once, Shri Krishna enacted a pastime in which He appeared to suffer from severe bodily pain. When Narad Ji arrived and asked about His condition, Shri Krishna replied that only the dust of a devotee’s feet could cure Him.
Thinking no devotees could be more elevated than the queens of Dwaraka, Narad Ji approached them and requested the dust of their feet. Astonished by the request, the queens refused, saying, “How could we ever offer the dust of our feet to our Lord?”
Defeated, Narad Ji returned to Shri Krishna and asked for His guidance to find a devotee willing to offer foot dust. Shri Krishna instructed him to go to Braj.
Although Narad Ji arrived in disguise, the Gopis recognized him immediately. As soon as they heard that their Beloved was suffering and that the dust of their feet could cure Him, they offered it without a moment’s hesitation, saying, “Take it quickly and go!”
Narad Ji warned them, “Offering the dust of your feet to the Supreme Lord will bring terrible scriptural consequences and send you to hell.”
The Gopis replied, “The scriptures can be discussed later. First, let our Beloved be relieved of His suffering. His happiness alone is the purpose of our lives. If we must suffer in hell for this, so be it. We have endured countless hardships before—let Him simply become well.”
Narad Ji carried the dust to Shri Krishna, and His illness disappeared immediately.
Such is the authority of love in Madhurya Bhav that the devotee may even offer the dust of her feet to the Lord. Even affectionate reproach becomes an expression of love. In the lanes of Braj, the Gopis would lovingly call Shri Krishna the “crown jewel among thieves.” Hearing this, Shri Krishna would be delighted and say, “What did you say? Please say it again.” In Goloka, everyone praises Him, and the Vedas glorify Him endlessly; yet these loving reproaches of Braj delight Him immensely. This is the power of Gopi Prem.
The Gopis had no concern for worldly distinctions, social conventions, caste, family prestige, or scriptural scholarship. Narad Ji defines pure devotion as offering every action, duty, and moment of life to Shri Krishna while experiencing intense anguish if His remembrance is lost even for an instant. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu explains that such longing becomes so intense that a single moment of separation feels like an entire age. This feeling of separation is the very spark of Bhakti.
Narad Ji himself humbly acknowledges that although he is the Acharya of Bhakti, he does not possess this love in its perfection—it existed fully only in the Gopis of Braj. For this reason, he accepts them as the highest authority on divine love.
The Gopis are also the ultimate example of Karmayog. Every action they performed was solely for Shri Krishna’s pleasure. A devotee should cultivate desires related to Shri Krishna and His divine service, but never for personal enjoyment. Every desire should exist only for His happiness. This principle is beautifully expressed by Narad Ji in the verse tat sukha sukhitvam—to find one’s own happiness solely in the happiness of Shri Krishna.
One who practices such selfless love never falls from the path of devotion. A devotee stumbles only when seeking personal gratification. In worldly relationships, love weakens when expectations go unfulfilled. But one who seeks only Shri Krishna’s happiness expects nothing in return, remaining undisheartened, undisrupted, and unshaken. Whatever Shri Krishna chooses to do becomes a continuous source of joy.
This is the supreme goal toward which Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj guides every spiritual aspirant. He tirelessly taught the path of Gopi Prem: to love Shri Krishna with no desire except for His happiness. Let us keep this ideal before us and continue progressing toward that state where our complete happiness lies in the happiness of our Beloved.
